Keep Your Meter Clear and Accessible

Keep Your Meter Clear and Accessible

Corning Natural Gas Corporation reminds all customers to keep their gas meters clear and accessible year-round. While meters are built to handle outdoor conditions, certain hazards can compromise their safe operation. To help protect your meter and ensure reliable gas service:

  • Clear snow regularly. Gently brush away snow using a broom-never shovel, blow, or pile snow on or against your meter. Avoid plowing near the meter, as packed snow can stress gas piping and lead to leaks.
  • Prevent ice buildup. Ice can block the regulator vent, disrupting gas flow and creating hazardous conditions. Keep gutters clean and repair any leaks to prevent dripping water from freezing over the meter. Remove overhanging icicles or roof ice that could fall and cause damage.
  • Do not strike or hit the meter. Never kick, hit, or forcefully remove snow or ice from the meter or piping. This can cause serious damage and increase the risk of a gas leak.
  • Keep vegetation under control. Trim back any high grass, shrubs, or plants around the meter. Overgrowth can obstruct access, conceal hazards, and interfere with meter maintenance or emergency response.
  • Do not attach anything to the meter set. Avoid tying items such as bicycles, dog leashes, holiday decorations, or tarps to the meter or connected piping. This can damage the equipment or restrict its operation.
  • Ensure access in emergencies. Our crews need clear, unobstructed access to your meter at all times. If blocked, response efforts may be delayed while access is restored.
