Chimney Maintenance and Upkeep

Chimney Maintenance and Upkeep

When switching from a solid fuel source (such as oil, wood, coal, or pellets) to natural gas, it's critical to have your chimney and/or exhaust flue pipe cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional.

While natural gas appliances burn cleaner and don't produce visible soot like solid fuels, they do generate more moisture in their exhaust. When this moisture mixes with residual soot in an uncleaned flue, it can cause deterioration of masonry chimneys, leading to:

  • Poor venting
  • Improper draft
  • Unsafe operation of your heating system

  • High-Efficiency Heating Systems and Chimney Compatibility

New high-efficiency systems may not be compatible with existing masonry chimneys. These systems often require:

  • Direct venting through an exterior wall using plastic vent pipe, or
  • A stainless-steel chimney liner if the existing chimney is to be used.

Before installing high-efficiency equipment, be sure to ask your heating contractor about any special venting requirements.

  • Annual Inspection and Tune-Up: A Smart Safety Step

Regardless of the fuel used in your home, an annual heating system tune-up is strongly recommended. This includes:

  • Servicing the heating equipment
  • Inspecting the chimney and/or flue pipe

Routine maintenance ensures your system runs safely and efficiently protecting your home and your investment for years to come.
