Preventing Gas Facility Damage

CALL 811 OR CLICK BEFORE YOU DIG

Beneath your feet is a complex network of underground utilities, including natural gas, electricity, communications, water, and sewer lines. Whether you're starting a large construction project or a small backyard job, contacting UDIG NY before you dig is essential to prevent damage and ensure safety.

Unsafe digging can cause serious injury, property damage, and service interruptions. One in three utility damages nationwide occurs because someone didn't call 811. Never assume you know what's below-always notify before you dig.

Simple Steps to Safer Digging

  1. Make the Notification. Before any digging, call 811 or submit a location request online at www.exactix.udigny.org. These free, simple steps alerts all affected utility companies of your planned project.
  2. Call or Click in Advance. Submit your request at least two days but no more than ten business days before digging (excluding the day you call or submit) to allow time for utilities to mark their lines.
  3. Provide Project Details. When you call or click, you'll be asked to provide the dig location and a brief description of your work. A ticket number will be issued for your request.
  4. Wait for Utility Markings.. Corning Natural Gas and other utilities will dispatch professional locators to your site to mark the approximate location of underground lines.
  5. Respect the Markings.Keep all paint and flags in place until excavation is complete. Remove them once your work is finished and they are no longer needed.
  6. Know the Color Each type of underground utility is marked with a specific color:

Dig with Caution. Once lines have been properly marked and a positive response has been received:

  • Hand dig carefully around marked areas.
  • Never use equipment within 24 inches of any markings or exposed utilities.
  • Design around utilities to avoid digging close to them.
  • Remember: markings do not indicate depth-ground shifting, erosion, or settling can alter line locations.
